Vessel Linux
A Linux distribution built with Sigil. The design describes a whole machine as one Sigil program: packages, services, users and storage. The experiment already produces a reproducible disk image; building it twice produces the same image.
The plan is for every change to become a generation you can boot back into. The desktop will use Wayland, PipeWire and Tessera, without a desktop environment's worth of dependencies along for the ride.
A MACHINE, DECLARED
(system
kernel: (kernel package: linux)
packages: (list busybox foot tessera)
services: (list (getty-service "tty1")
(ssh-server-service)
(wireguard-service "wg0"))
storage: (disk-layout root: 'immutable))Proposed configuration. The system interfaces are still taking shape.
STATUS
Pre-release. Vessel boots in QEMU; there is nothing to install yet.
- Boots from a UEFI disk image with SSH, WireGuard and state that survives a reboot.
- Two independent builds produce byte-identical images.
- Next: service definitions written in Sigil, then generations and rollback, then a Tessera desktop session.
